Peter Escapes from Prison Sunday School Lesson

Use this Peter Escapes from Prison Sunday School Lesson to teach kids about how an angel helped him.

Needed: Bibles

Lesson: (Note: Always allow students to give their answers to the questions before you clarify the teaching.)

Ask students, Are you allowed to believe in Jesus?

What if it was against the law to believe in Jesus? Would you still believe in Him?

(Have students take turns reading Acts 12:1-2, or read it yourself.)

Why did King Herod have James killed? (Because James believed in Jesus and the King did not.)

(Have students take turns reading Acts 12:3-4, or read it yourself.)

Why did King Herod have Peter put in jail? (Because Peter believed in Jesus.)

(Have students take turns reading Acts 12:5-10, or read it yourself.)

How did Peter get out of jail? (An angel came and helped him.)

Who sent the angel to help Peter? (God.)

Do you think God can help you when you have hard times? (Yes.)

God might not always send an angel to help you, but He will do something to help you.

(Have students take turns reading Acts 12:11-15, or read it yourself.)

When Peter knocked on the door of the house, did the people think it was really him? (No.)

They thought it was Peter’s ghost, his spirit. They thought he had died in jail and they were seeing his ghost, but it really was him.

(Have students take turns reading Acts 12:16-24, or read it yourself.)

What happened to the King who had Peter arrested? (God sent an angel to kill him because he did not believe in God.)

Game: Prison Tag – Pick someone to be King Herod. They are “It.” Pick another person to be the angel. Everyone else is Peter. When Herod tags someone, they have to freeze, like Peter being in jail. But the Angel can come tag the person and unfreeze them, like the angel setting Peter free. Herod cannot tag the Angel. Let everyone have a chance at being Herod and the Angel.
