Online Sunday School Lessons - "Jesus is Patient" - Luke 13:1-9

Another of our great online Sunday School lessons. Use this lesson to teach children about Jesus' patience toward us.

Ask students, What do trees make? (Leaves, branches, nuts, fruits)

Jesus told a story about a tree once.

(Read or paraphrase Luke 13:6.) A man planted a fruit tree, but after three years, the tree still hadn't made any fruit!

What would you do if you had a fruit tree that didn't make any fruit?

(Read or paraphrase Luke 13:7.) The man said, "This tree isn't any good. I'm going to cut it down and get rid of it."

Does that sound like a good plan?

(Read or paraphrase Luke 13:8-9.) Then the man's friend told him, "Be patient and let the tree grow one more year. Maybe it will make fruit next year. If not, you can always cut it down then."

The man's friend told the man to be patient with the tree. And that's how Jesus is with us. He wants us to do the right things, just like the man wanted the tree to make good fruit, but sometimes we do the wrong things instead. We all make mistakes, right? And one day, Jesus will punish us if He has to, but He would rather be patient with us and wait to see if we will do the right thing next time even if we did the wrong thing this time.

Let's pray about that.

Sample prayer: Jesus, we thank You for loving us and being patient with us. We pray that You will help us to learn to do the right things that You want us to do so that we can make You happy with us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
