Fathers Day Sunday School Lesson - "Honor Your Father and Mother"

Use this Fathers Day Sunday School lesson to teach children why God tells us to obey our parents.

Needed: (optional - a gift for fathers)

Ask students, How many of you have heard of the Ten Commandments? What are they?

The Ten Commandments are God's top ten rules, the most important rules that God wants us to follow.

Can any of you tell me some of the Ten Commandments? (Listed in Exodus 20:3-17.)

1. Only worship the one real God.
2. Don't have idols.
3. Don't misuse God's name.
4. Keep one day a week special for God and for resting.
5. Honor your father and mother.
6. Don't murder.
7. Don't cheat on your husband or wife.
8. Don't steal.
9. Don't tell lies about someone.
10. Don't be jealous of what other people have.

Now, did you notice that one of those rules is "Honor your father and mother"? What does it mean to honor your father and mother?

It means to listen to and obey your parents, to learn what they want to teach us and do what they tell us to do.

And do you know why God wants us to listen to our parents?

The rest of that commandment says "so that you can have a long life." If we listen to our parents and keep their teaching in our hearts, then those things are going to help us be safe and happy and live good long lives.

That's the reason God gives us all of His rules. He knows that if we follow His rules, we'll be able to stay safe and happy our whole life.

Let's pray about that.

Sample prayer: Father God, we thank You for our parents. We thank You for the things that they teach us and we pray that You will help us to remember those things and to honor our parents by obeying them the best that we can. Amen.

And now, because it's Father's Day, I want you to thank your dad by giving him a special gift today. (Give students the gifts to pass out.)
