David Lies - Right or Wrong? Youth Bible Study on 1 Samuel 21

Brief: God cares about our motives.


Intro Question
Have you ever told a lie?

Is it ever okay to lie?

 
Scripture: 1 Samuel 21:1-15; 1 Kings 22:10-23

Last time, we read about how King Saul wanted to kill David because Saul was jealous of David’s popularity. Saul’s son, Jonathan, was David’s best friend and helped him escape from Saul.


Is David telling the priest the truth? (No.)

 

Is David telling the priest the truth? (No.)

 

Is David telling the priest the truth? (No.)

 

Is David telling the foreign king the truth? (No.)

 

Why did David lie to the priest and the foreign king?

Was David justified in lying? Was it right that he lied?

Is God ever okay with lying?

 

What does the spirit suggest that he do? (He suggests that he lie to the prophets.)

Does God allow him to do it? (Yes.)

What can we learn from this?

God does not lie, but He sometimes allows others to use deception if they have a good reason for it. God cares about why we’re lying, not simply whether we’re lying.
